ABOUT FAĖ
The Crown is a debut album by FAĖ, a young British singer-songwriter who arranged and performs on all tracks as a solo artist, accompanying herself on the piano. The songs have been written over a two year period and reflect changes in mood, in relationships and in the complexities of modern life. All the upbeat tracks have a dark side and all the sadder ones contain a streak of optimism. Nothing is black and white.
At the age of 24, FAĖ is emerging as an artist of substance with a loyal following among independent musicians and music fans. Her voice can move from vulnerable to assertive to angry according to the emotional content of the individual songs. The pain of ‘I lost God’ sharply contrasts with the impatience of ‘Anxieties’ and the plea for freedom in ‘I can’t leave if you won’t let me go’ grows into the independence of ‘The Wood’ and then into the carefree reflection of ‘When I was young’ . After the painful love of ‘Honeybee’, with the closing track, the title of the album, we are unsure of where it has gone. It is a brief, but poignant track which could be an act of submission or an ironic dismissal.
FAĖ knows how to tell a story in music. Like an author or a painter her art is to mingle light and shadow. We know that there is something below the surface – a back story or a figure in the shadows – but it remains ephemeral and distant. The intangible, intermingled natures of life and love, joy and pain, and restraint and freedom give this album a subtle blend of flavours.
