THE BLUE VOODOO
One of our favorite bands from north of the border, Canada's The Blue Voodoo, are back with a solid slab of irresistible party blues with the release of "Back To The Shack." It's a cool amalgam of blues, roots-rock, and a little bit o'soul in the mix. These guys have a unique sound forged from playing together for quite some time, and writing all their own material. They consist of Ted Tosoff on guitar and vocals, brother Bryon on keys, Rick Dalgarno on slide, dobro, and vocals, Kelly Stodola on drums, Gerry Berg on bass, Dave Hoerl on harp, and horns courtesy of Paul Wainwright. Check out the rockabilly-ish tale we can all relate to, those "Monday Morning Blues." "Suitcase Blues" is a lowdown slice of life concerning a lover who's leaving, with a really cool slide break and a vocal reminiscent of vintage Johnny Winter. "Somewhere Else Instead" is driven by the funky horn section, giving it an old-school Stax feel. We had two favorites, too. More great slide work and solid harp drives the story of a man who's been away from the comforts of home just a wee bit too long in "Mojo Lovin' Man." And, there's a "Black Moon Over Mississippi," and anyone caught "at the crossroads" can choose to "live in the sunshine" or make the same deal that Robert Johnson made....
Signature tight harmonies, great instrumentation, and clever original tunes are the trademarks of The Blue Voodoo. Fans, "Back To The Shack" is guaranteed to satisfy your "blues Jones!!" Until next time....Sheryl and Don Crow

*THE BLUE VOODOO: BACK TO THE SHACK (BLUE VOODOO)* Review by Andy Grigg, Real Blues Magazine. www.realbluesmagazine.com
In terms of commitment, persistence and dedication, *The Blue Voodoo *band (*Ted Tosoff, Rick Dalgarno, Kelly Stodola *and *Gerry Berg*) has few peers. These guys have been slogging it out for at least 5 years (to my knowledge) in an era (and market) that is becoming increasingly unfriendly to live music and especially Blues Bands. They’ve had the dogged determination to create their own gigs when other bands just simply gave up (and that may be the saving grace for Blues Bands in the next decade (i.e. become self-reliant and rent your own Halls etc…just like we did in the 1960s/1970s) and The Blue Voodoo steadily created a very large following in Vancouver and throughout Southern British Columbia. The other thing they should be lauded for is creating their own unique music and original material and gradually honing their identity and sound. I’ve heard their last 2 CDs and listened to them doggedly develop to the point where “Back To The Shack” has garnered loads of support in the U.S. and Europe, giving them the reputation they needed to move up the ladder and compete with The Big Boys.
This is a hard-core veteran band of life long music lovers and they’ve also got ‘guests’ of note sitting-in on this disc: *Dave ‘Hurricane’ Hoerl* on harp, *Paul Wainwright* (sax), *Daniel Ross* (strings and guitar), *Chris Weeks* (backup vocals) and last, but not least, Bryon Tosoff on keyboards. This album is dedicated to *Ted Tosoff* Sr. and to the memory of *Vivian Marie Tosoff* (their Mom, who gave her love of music to her sons) ). The vintage photo cover is of Ted Tosoff Sr. in the 1930s and it’s quite a vivid image.
“Back To The Shack” has a lot of Power in the Sound (overall) thanks to some terrific horn charts from Wainwright who multi-tracked sax ‘sections’ seamlessly. This is very evident on the opening track “Somewhere Else Instead”, a hard-rockin’ number that quickly establishes the identity of the disc.
“Watcha Think About That” is an excellent bit of song crafting and it straddles the Rock/C&W/Blues genres effortlessly. One the DJs will love. “Shoeshine Shuffle” is another original ‘hot one’ that features a fiery guitar solo (Dalgarno?) and acoustic harp from Hurricane Hoerl. By the 3rd track’s end you will agree that this CD needs to be targeted at the huge Rock audience as it’s definitely better than 95% of the crud that’s being peddled as Rock these days.
“Black Moon” is another hard-rockin’ gem with tasty guitar and a nice Hammond organ swirling about. “Monday Mornin’ Blues” cries out for a video. A real jumpin’, infectious ditty with baritone sax bottom (or pseudo-baritone?) and the guitar work will have every old-time Rocker smilin’. Just how much they’ve evolved just in the last 2 years is really amazing and this disc certainly deserves Juno consideration (based on the music…).
Each track is a revelation, especially for those of us who’ve followed The Blue Voodoo. They’ve evolved to the point where they should have U.S. labels seeking them out for distribution and given that these guys are ‘True Believers; in the Power of Music as a Healer and connecting link to all Humanity, it couldn’t happen to a more deserving crew.
“Sunny Day” is another excellent track and “Simple” is a balls-out rocker that is aimed at the dance-floor. Definitely has the power to become an Anthem and the guitar work will have you grabbing your air-Telecaster. It is a knock-out. “Suitcase Blues” gets back in the alley with sweet slide and harp and it’s another Ace track. (Geez, Dalgarno & Tosoff have emerged as a supremely Excellent song-writing duo). Nice drum work from Stodola and throbbing bass from Berg. I think this is my favorite…so far.
“Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is a poignant take on the hypocrisy that still prevails in neighboring cultures (and here too…). “Gone” is a ballad (I’m not big on ballads, but it’s well done) and “Mojo Lovin’ Man” is a superb Blues-rocker that’s guaranteed to please everyone from old Blues fogeys to 20-somethings who’ve never heard of *Muddy*. “World Is Burnin’” is a comment on today’s pain-filled world and it is another excellent track. Everything is just right. The Production work warrants Juno consideration as well.
If there’s a Canadian Blues/Rock album as good as “Back To The Shack” I’m not aware of it. (And they did it all without help from anyone in Toronto!). The last track “Texas Speed Trap” is another hard rocker and a fine closer. Besides being an extremely enjoyable album to listen to, “Back To The Shack” also is a hard-hitting reminder of what Blues/Rock and Rock are SUPPOSED to sound like with real people playing all the instruments. I have to be honest; this CD is far, far better than I had anticipated. I listened briefly to 3 tracks on a portable player 2 weeks ago and now after listening to it full-volume on a good stereo, I’ve just had my mind deliciously blown. These guys will probably be the next BIG THING in Canada (and beyond). There’s too many fantastic tunes/performances to deny The Blue Voodoo their ascension to the TOP. While it’s not a PURE Blues album (technically) it is PURE TRUTH Rockin’ Blues/Rock’n Roll and that’s a rarity in today’s World of poseurs and phoney music.

The Blue Voodoo steps back into the blues music scene with a vengeance with the release of their new album “Back To The Shack”.
This has got to be one of the best blues bands in the America's. This album demonstrates what a band can do when they write their own material and play their instruments like banshees from hell. Each track is dynamic with its own unique sound and that's a great thing for fans of truly great music. "Back To The Shack” covers the gamut of genres of roots music, from blues to roots country and roots rock. The group writes in a broad variety of styles but identifiably is a blues band. Yes, they've got their mojo working (hear Mojo Lovin' Man) but they also touch on southern rock and country,and they write songs devoid of the usual blues cliches. Since 2000, Ted Tosoff and Rick Dalgarno have played their brand of blues rock at just about every possible venue in Western Canada and Europe. The BLUE VOODOO HAVE BEEN NOMINATED for Outstanding Blues Album of the Year, WCMA -(WESTERN CANADIAN MUSIC AWARDS)
Local Surrey based band the Blue Voodoo have received a WCMA nomination for Outstanding Blues Recording for their Sparkle and Shine CD which was released in November 2004.
The group has been nominated before in 2003 for Best New Artist at the MAPLE BLUES AWARDS in Toronto and expect to be nominated again at the Maples for a number of awards this year for their Blues Album, Sparkle and Shine
The Blue Voodoo play the blues circuit in Vancouver and throughout the Lower Mainland. Their album was released in 23 countries and has been played on over 700 radio stations.
A new Album will be released early 2006 to co-inside with their 2 month trip to Europe in January 2006.

Nashvilles Music City Blues Review of Sparkle and Shine

Sparkle And Shine is the second release from a very talented quartet from Vancouver,British Columbia.
They consist of Rick Dalgarno on vocals, slide and rhythm guitar,
Ted Tosoff on vocals and rhythm guitar, Dan Ross on bass, and Chris Weekes on percussion. Together, these fellows take the
traditional sounds of the Delta masters and put a modern spin on
them, all the while holding to the true roots of the blues.
There's a lot of good blues presented here. Rick Dalgarno's vocal
and slide drives "Walk'n Shoes," which features some tight background harmonies. The title cut is a good-rockin' shuffle that serves as an ode to a young lady who's cookin' up a "little somethin' special" in her kitchen!
We had three favorites, though. Chris Weekes' vocal on "Wake
Up" makes use of some good echo effects, sounding almost as if it were Howlin' Wolf himself channeled through a harp mic. Rick Dalgarno buys a "ticket goin' nowhere" on a haunting, slide-soaked "Railway Blues," while the opposite is true where the blues meets the gospel on a tale of traveling down life's paths and coming back around "Full Circle."
Excellent musicianship and smooth harmonies are the trademark
of this outstanding group from north of the border. Fans of slide

The blues, emotionally speaking, are universal. Heartache and sorrowand the very human need to cry out in acknowledgement and defiance of it all are part of our shared experience. It's why traditional delta blues can still reach us across the years.
But the blues rely on truth, and if ones truth includes a musical
education significantly more sophisticated than most early
practitioners of the form, combined with an urban experience they couldn't have imagined . . . well, the blues that result are going to sound different.
Vancouver's "The Blue Voodoo" guitarists Rick Dalgarno and Ted Tosoff and percussionist Chris Weekes have never picked cotton under the blazing Mississippi sun. But the driving rhythms and stark imagery of delta blues infuses every groove of "Sparkle and Shine", their stunning follow-up to 2003 "Ride".
Although there are touches of electric guitar here and there, the
overal feel on "Sparkle And Shine" is acoustic. Dalgarno contributes both six and twelve-string as well as slide guitars along with dobro and acoustic harmonica; Tosoff is on acoustic rhythm for most songs and contributes electric bass on some (with Dan Ross guesting on the rest); and percussionist Weekes, whose arsenal includes djembe and box o rocks, is as likely to be welding brushes as sticks.
All three share vocal duties, Dalgarno and Tosoff taking the lion's share. Weekes feral growl is strikingly effective as employed here (sparingly), but both Dalgarno and Tosoff are top-notch, rough-hewn and real throughout.
Tosoff's brother (and the band's number one booster), Bryon, adds sparkling piano on several tracks to excellent effect.
And then there are the songs. By no means restricted to twelve-bar convention, there's often a hint of southern soul at play, and
whoever's responsible (notes don't list individual writers, and credit the band as a whole with arrangements, they have an uncanny way with hooks. Add in layered guitars and percussion, top with ragged harmonies, and the result is both raucous and righteous.
The boys explore familiar themes witness both "Walkin' Shoes" and "Railway Blues", both originals,but they do so on their own terms, with more than a hint of hipster cool and an edgy energy that's utterly irresistible.
A rollicking good time from beginning to end, "Sparkle And Shine" is an unqualified delight, a first-rate outing that proves that blues canstand a little livening up, can even (horrors!) be fun!

The Blue Voodoo Receive Five Stars on sparkle and shine release
I've been blown away by this band, The Blue Voodoo!
First off, the vocals on this album are off the wall. Every song on this cd is absolutely everything that blues music could and should be; full of passion.
Rick Dalgarno has a style all his own with his rip roaring rock vocal sound and scorching guitar licks.
Sparkle and Shine just wouldn't be an awesome album without Chris Weekes keeping a tight rythym on the skins, Ted Tosoff blasting the rythym guitar, and Daniel Ross keeping the soul in check with big bad bass.
Everything from the lyrics, to the production, the overall sound of this album, and band in general kicks butt! I'd have to say these boys have a hold on the blues so you'd better jump on with them and hang on for the ride. Fabulous!!

About the Blue Voodoo
Born out of the Delta in B.C. Canada, the Blue Voodoo has created their own unique blend of acoustic roots and blues-rock. What sets the blue voodoo apart from many bands today is their ability to provide rich harmonies and rhythms that will captivate anyone who hears them, that is voodoo magic for sure. They can offer up any style of music from straight ahead rock to ballads and or blues. Perfect to fit the many tastes and requests of your patrons.
Rick "the devil" Dalgarno Rick’s unique singing style and guitar playing is inspiring and captivating. He provides a raw emotion and intensity that is rooted in the blues music he performs. Rick’s playing really shines through on the Delta Blues style and has a magic all his own on the Dobro.
Ted "Teddy J" Tosoff. Ted offers gripping vocals, superb harmonies and is terrific on rhythm guitar. He is multi-faceted in playing many instruments including keyboards, percussion and guitar as well as handling the group’s onstage engineering and sound when performing at smaller venues.
Chris "o-tay" Weekes offers great vocals and some crazy percussion. Chris Weekes' own unconventional percussion is a cornerstone of the group, his 'kit' complete with tambourines, exotic instruments, shakers, along with the traditional snare and bass adds to the unique sound of this West Coast Group.

Playing, recording and writing music is all I've really known or cared for. I guess, for me...this thing called The Blue Voodoo is a musical soul-cleansing and the sum of all I have done. I have been a part of many musical projects, but none have captured the essence that The Blue Voodoo manages to. For me, the Voodoo sound and appearance lets me be me - if that makes any sense. There is a weird magic in our three-way circle that can only be described as THE VOODOO feeling.
